Teacher Stipends for Teachers of Less-Commonly-Taught Languages
Teachers of any European less-commonly-taught language on any level—K-12 or post-secondary—are eligible for a Teacher Stipend of $600 to participate in 2008 CARLA Summer Institutes for Languages Teachers. These stipends are made possible by a Title VI Grant from the US Department of Education.
2008 CARLA Summer Institutes for Languages Teachers
Eligibility
The purpose of the Teacher Stipends is the enhancement of LCTL teaching in the United States. Therefore, persons who do not teach a LCTL in the United States or who are not American citizens or permanent residents are NOT eligible. Less Commonly Taught Languages as defined by the US Deparment of Education include any language other than German, French, Russian, and Spanish.
Please note that preference will be given to language teachers outside of the University of Minnesota. University of Minnesota language teachers may apply for tuition waivers offered by CARLA. Please contact the CARLA office at carla@umn.edu for more information.
Information about the stipends:
- Registration for the CARLA summer institutes prior to the application deadline is recommended to ensure a place in any of these popular institutes. Stipends are processed once the summer institute begins and take 3-4 weeks to process.
- Stipends can only be awarded for less commonly taught foreign languages, and not U.S. indigenous languages as per Title VI funding regulations.
- Stipends may not be awarded to foreign nationals as per Title VI funding regulations; however, a foreign national who possesses a green card and is teaching a LCTL in the U.S. may apply for a stipend.
- Stipends cannot be awarded to applicants who live in the Twin Cities area; however applicants may apply for a waiver of the cost of the institute ($300) rather than a stipend. Teachers who have already received a fee waiver from CARLA are not eligible to apply.
